L'Océan Austral est aussi important pour le climat de la planète qu'il nous est inconnu. En raison de ses conditions météorologiques extrêmes, en particulier l'hiver, son étude reste très partielle. C'est pourquoi l'explorateur français Jean-Louis Etienne a conçu le Polar Pod, une plateforme océanographique capable de naviguer dans ses eaux tout au long de l'année.
The Southern Ocean is of upmost importance for the global climate, but to to its extreme meteorological conditions, especially during winter, it remains a large data gap. This is why the french explorer Jean-Louis Etienne, designed the Polar Pod, an oceanographic platform capable to sail in its waters all around the year.

En mer de Ross, à plus de 77 degrés sud, au mois de février, c'est la fin de l'été austral. La banquise commence à se former par petites plaques. On l'appelle la pancake ice. Bientôt, elle ne formera plus qu'une immense plaque et enfermera tout le continent.
In the Ross Sea, at 77 degrees south, in february it is the end of the southern summer. The sea ice formation has started with little crystrals fusing together in a pancake shape. This is pancake ice. Soon, there will be large floes enclosing all the continent.
